Kosovo - minorities

The passage from elite to a discriminated-against minority was a hard blow to ethnic Serbs in Kosovo. They had been used to issuing orders and found themselves without even the most elementary rights, living in their own house but becoming aware that it had become a hostile environment. March 2004 held a clear message from the Albanians: Kosovo is ours and you must leave. Whoever was able to had done so already, those who remained had nowhere else to go. Kosovar Serbs are not accepted in Serbia, just like Kosovar Albanians are not accepted in Albania. It seems to be a curse on this land. There are those who have discovered they are a minority only now, and those who have always been a minority: the Roms and the Gorans. The former have always and are still disliked by all the other ethnic groups. The Roms have always had to do the dirty work for whoever was in power and this has led to them being everyone’s enemy. The Goran live isolated in the mountains, a minority on the outskirts. This being on the outskirts has kept them relatively safe from the more cruel phase of the conflict, it now isolates away from reconstruction efforts.
